Sitting at the Mekong

A longtail boat is border crossing with some tourists. Might have been the last boat for this day, it's short before 6 pm. The border is, by the way, open from six to six.

In the background is Huayxai in Laos.

The Houseboat Restaurant

A cool breeze at hot days

Definitely one of the coolest places to go in Chiang Khong is the Houseboat Restaurant. It's a stonethrow north of the border crossing. It's really Thai / Laotion style. Rustic, with an interesting decoration. Spacious and quiet it's a good place to have a beer. The food is also good. Asian food only. One sits directly at the water and can watch many birds around there. Not only the chicken, geese and ducks who are around in great number, but swallows and other birds as well. The car ferry is coming along frequently as well as the small longtail boats with a handful of tourists on board. You can also watch the big houseboat freighters coming from China via Burma. On hot days there is a nice, cool breeze over the water entering the place.

Most of the time there are no or very few guests. The place is a bit adventurous. The guys there are friendly but different from the staff in 'normal' restaurants. I guess there is some smuggling going on. But, that's pure speculation. Very particular: Although in really any restaurant one is permanently exposed to music, like it or not, normally they here don't play music. Great place to enjoy silence, watch the river live, reading a book...

The view over the river. It's one of these smoky days in mid March. Over the year it looks always different.
